Ceramic Coating & Paint Correction - A Deeper Dive

What is it? And what are the differences? In less than 5 minutes you will know more than most.

Ok, let us start of with simply the anatomy of car paint. Looking at the surface of a car, the 'paint' is often commonly referred to everything from base metal and up. In reality, 'paint' is one of several layers on a cars surface.

Car paint layers simplified

When you get a scratch on your car, light or heavy, it will first hit the clear coat before it can begin to cut through color.

So what is clear coat?

Clear coat is a protective, transparent layer that is applied over paint to protect the vehicle from things like scratches, fading, and oxidation. It's what gives the color it's beautiful glossy look. Without clear coat, a car's paint would be exposed, almost like being out in the sun without any sunscreen.

Ok, lets move forward.

Example of paint layers with different layers of scratches

Here we have an example of typical car scratches. You have your swirls, marring and then deep scratches. Now, when we talk about 'correcting' a car, we are actually talking about removing a very thin layer of clear coat using polishers/sanding and rotary machines in order to 'cut' down some of the marring/swirls and essentially level out the clear coat. Below is an illustration of that.

Paint layers with scratch examples and different levels of polishing

When we do a 1 step paint correction, lighter swirls and scratches are removed, but some deeper scratches may remain especially deep ones that hit paint. A 2 step correction does better, it involves sanding and rotary cutting, that is just a more aggressive tool used for cutting away at clear coat. It will remove some deeper marring and scratches but wont fully remove a very deep scratch.

Now we are at a bit of a dilemma. Typically when we talk about 2 step paint corrections we are talking about a service running about $1200, so why aren't we able to remove those very deep scratches at that price tag? Keep in mind, even a 1 step correction can take a minimum of 6-8 hours of precise polishing, a 2 step correction can increase that time to well over 12 hours.

Here's my answer. When presented with a vehicle to service, we take a good look at the paint's condition: deep scratches, swirls, paint chips, rock chips, clear coat thickness, haziness, holograms, water spots, bug etching, pitting, paint run...

The point is, a lot can happen to your car's paint (I am using 'paint' to describe everything from metal and up)

When we do a paint correction, we try to tackle these problems head on. So while we can remove many defects, some areas of the car may have deep scratches that go farther than clear coat and hitting paint, sometimes even hitting metal. In these cases we would consider that to be damage that must be repainted, otherwise we can sand it down to improve but not to fully remove. If you were worried about multiple paint level scratches, we would recommend a body shop to assist you.

Why would someone get a paint correction anyways? The short answer is to make the vehicle much more glossier. The long answer can be found in another blog from us! Check out "Swirls - What You Can Do About It" in our blog posts for more information.

What about ceramic coatings? What can that do for a car and what is it?

SYSTEM X Ceramic Coating

Here at BOX Detailing & Paint Corrections, all of our technicians are certified installers for the SYSTEM X line of ceramics.

Ceramic coatings are thin, protective layer that is typically applied over clear coat after a paint correction to increase the lifespan of your original clear coat. Below is an example

Example of ceramic coating layer on top of a clear coat and all other paint layers by extension

Ceramic coatings are NOT a replacement for clear coat. Clear coats are designed to last for over a decade, ceramic coatings are usually only designed to last 2-6 years and absolutely MUST be maintained. More about ceramic maintenance in our blog "Recently Coated? How To Keep Your Ceramic Happy - A Quick Guide."

Ceramic coatings are transparent, made primarily of silicon dioxide (Si02), when applied it forms a semi permanent bond on the surface of your car. In fact, one of the many appeals for ceramic coatings are that it will maintain a very glossy look.

One question we are often asked is

"Do I need to get a paint correction before getting a ceramic coating?"

It is a very important question and answers will vary from detailer to detailer. Here at our shop, we do not apply ceramic coatings without first polishing paint.

Your car is straight out of the dealership? Still needs a polish.

You buff your paint once a year? Still needs a polish.

You want only the ceramic coating? No can do, we require you to have a polish.

If your car is still looking dull before a ceramic coating, then applying a coating would just lock in that dull look. Not only that, but there might still be some contaminants under the coating that could begin to further eat into the paint and now cannot be easily taken care of because the coating has hardened over it. For more information about outside elements and what some of them can do to your paint, see our blog "Car Paint is Like Skin - What To Look Out For."

If you want the true benefits for ceramic coatings here are a couple

  1. Easier to wash and maintain

  1. Will increase and protect the longevity of your clear coat

  1. Lasting glossy look

And those are just the main benefits.

At the end of the day, your vehicle is an investment — and more than that, it’s something you take pride in. Understanding the difference between paint correction and ceramic coatings helps you make informed decisions about how to protect and maintain it properly.

Paint correction restores.

Ceramic coatings protect.

Together, they enhance, preserve, and elevate your vehicle’s appearance in a way that regular washing simply cannot.

Whether you're dealing with heavy swirls, deep scratches, or you simply want that deep, mirror-like gloss that turns heads in a parking lot, the right process makes all the difference.
